Privacy Policy
Effective and last updated: 2026-07-26
FamKnow helps people preserve family stories through conversation. This policy explains what information we process, why, and the choices you have. It is written for real product behavior—not generic website boilerplate.
1. Who we are
FamKnow is operated by the individual or legal entity that controls the famknow.com service (the “operator”). For privacy requests, use the contact options published on famknow.com when available, or initiate account-related requests while signed in under Profile.
2. Who this service is for
FamKnow accounts are intended for adults 18 years of age or older. Adults may preserve appropriate family stories that involve children when they have the authority and a lawful reason to do so. The contracting account holder must be an adult.
3. Information we collect
Account
- Email address and authentication credentials (handled by Supabase Auth)
- Optional display name and nickname
- Story title (subject name) you choose
- Terms acceptance metadata (policy version and time) when you sign up
Story content
- Conversation messages you send and companion replies
- Extracted timeline items: people, events, artifacts, and related fields
- Flags such as sensitive content when present
Public demo (“one moment”)
- The text of the moment you submit
- An AI-generated reflection and optional detected year
- A
famknow_session_tokenin browser local storage so a later account can claim the moment - A cryptographic hash of the visitor’s IP address for rate limiting in the held-moment system—not the raw IP in that database record
Technical and security
- Session cookies for signed-in use
- Ordinary hosting and security logs (which may include IP addresses and device information processed by infrastructure providers such as Vercel)
Voice
- Microphone input uses the browser’s speech recognition. Depending on the browser and operating system, speech may be processed by the browser or platform provider before FamKnow receives text.
- Optional spoken replies send the assistant’s text to OpenAI text-to-speech. FamKnow does not send your microphone recording to OpenAI for that feature.
4. Information about other people
FamKnow often holds information about people who are not users—living or deceased relatives, children, and others you mention. That information is generally supplied by an account holder.
If you are described in someone else’s FamKnow account and want review, correction, restriction, or deletion where applicable, contact us through the channels on famknow.com. We may need to balance your request with the account holder’s lawful personal or household use and other legal obligations. One person cannot simply “consent” for another competent adult.
5. How we use information
- Provide the companion chat, memory, and timeline
- Run the public demo reflection and claim flow
- Support optional web/image lookup when you ask
- Optional spoken playback of companion replies
- Secure the service, prevent abuse, and rate-limit the public demo
- Comply with law and enforce our Terms
Search is user-initiated conversational help. Results are leads, not verified family facts, and are not silently merged into your timeline as proven relationships.
6. AI and service providers
To run FamKnow we use carefully chosen processors. Story content and related requests may be sent to them as needed for the feature you use:
| Provider | Purpose | Information potentially sent |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Authentication, database | Account and story data |
| Anthropic | Chat, public demo reflection, extraction, tone | User messages and relevant story context |
| OpenAI | Text-to-speech (optional) | Assistant reply text only |
| Brave | Web and image search (when used) | Search terms derived from your request (may include names, places, years) |
| Vercel | Hosting and delivery | Requests, logs, IP/device information |
| Cloudflare (when enabled) | Bot and abuse protection | Request, device, network, verification data |
FamKnow does not use private story content to train its own general-purpose AI models and does not authorize its AI providers to use API content for general model training where the provider’s commercial terms make that control available. Provider retention and abuse-monitoring practices are governed by their commercial terms and FamKnow’s account configuration.
7. Cookies and similar technologies
We use essential cookies for authentication and sessions. The public demo may store a session token in local storage (not a cookie) so your moment can be claimed after signup. We do not use a cookie banner until we introduce nonessential analytics or advertising.
8. Retention
- Unclaimed public moments: deleted within approximately seven days.
- Claimed moments: become account timeline data and follow account retention.
- Messages, people, events, artifacts, timeline: retained until you delete them, close your account, or another rule applies.
- Generated speech audio: streamed for playback and not intentionally retained by FamKnow as a permanent library.
- Security and server logs: retained up to 30 days for security and operations, unless a longer period is required for an incident or legal obligation.
- Backups: overwritten on a rolling cycle of up to 30 days.
- Legal or fraud records: retained as reasonably necessary.
9. Your choices and rights
- Update profile details in Profile
- Delete individual timeline items when the product allows
- Delete your account in Profile (email verification code required), or start a request at Account deletion if you cannot sign in
- Request access, correction, or export by contacting us through famknow.com
If FamKnow is offered to people in the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or other jurisdictions with similar laws, we process personal data under applicable legal bases (for example contract, consent, or legitimate interests). Special-category data that appears in family stories (such as health, religion, or ethnic origin) is processed only as needed to provide the service you request and subject to applicable conditions. International transfers rely on vendor agreements and transfer tools we maintain with processors—not on policy wording alone.
10. Account deletion
Deleting your account is designed to remove associated account data from FamKnow’s primary systems: authentication user, profile, subjects, messages, events, people, artifacts, deletion challenges, and claim links on held moments. Hosting logs and backups may lag for a limited period as described above. A sensitivity flag is not a substitute for account deletion.
11. Security
We use administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information, including encrypted connections, access controls, database authorization rules, and restricted server credentials. No system can guarantee absolute security.
12. Children
FamKnow accounts are not directed to children under 18. Audio of a child’s voice can be personal information under children’s privacy laws; adults should use voice features carefully.
13. Changes
We may update this policy as the product changes. We will post the new effective date on this page. Material changes may also be noted in the product.
14. Contact
Privacy questions and non-user family information requests: use the contact methods published on famknow.com. Account deletion while signed in: Profile. If you cannot sign in: Account deletion.
